Music for your animating pleasure

I’ve had a lot of listeners say that they like to listen to The Animation Podcast while they animate. I think animating is hard enough as it is, so, personally, I can’t do it. Even listening to music takes some of the pep out of my animating muscles, so normally I work in silence. ¬°Qu?© l?°stima!

If you’re the type who is fueled by syncopated rhythms or a driving baseline (uh, yeah, I sound cool), then you’ve GOT to check out Pandora. It’s a free website that asks you for a song or artist you like and then it makes a surprisingly accurate playlist to keep you tapping your toes for hours. It plays through your browser and it really is amazing. You’re allowed up to 100 playlists so chances are good that you may discover new bands that you never knew existed.

For the last hour I’ve been coasting (that’s KOSTing in So. Cal.) along to a sweet blend of mellow seventies pop based on my search for the dearly dissolved band, Bread. Somehow that stuff doesn’t take much brain power.

I’m always on the lookout for some audio entertainment for you guys in between shows. Of course you’ll have to turn it off when my next show comes out, but you knew that. So what’s your playlist based upon?

  1. That Pandora thing is amazing ! My playlists are based upon Ben Harper and Pink Floyd, and it did a great job at playing similar musics.

  2. Outstanding ! Thanks for the tip about Pandora.

(I don’t listen to music while animating either, but this is great for doing other stuff . I love it) .

The play list I’m on right now was based on requesting : Bix Beiderbecke.
So far that’s gained me several pieces by Bix, , Red Nichols, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson, Wynton Marsalis . Too cool.

  3. Ok this is the coolest thing in the world. Clay, I’ve spread this to so many people ever since hearing about it 😀 This is an excellent way to put your band up if they had a way to do it. Gotta love the musical revolution. First time posting here I think, but love the show clay, and I have it on my iPod (which I listened to during one of my less interesting lectures in class the other day o_O!) Don’t worry, I think I’m passing 😀

  4. Mmm, mainly Nobuo Uematsu’s Final Fantasy 9 instrumental. Mostly from either the “PLUS” edition of the soundtrack or the Piano version played by Louis Leerink in order to calm my nerves down. I always freak out whenever I start animating –I’m almost done college but I’m still like this. It’s due to a first year animation teacher who’s pretty harsh…I get panicked whenever I animate

  5. Hi Clay, thanks for sharing, Pandora is great!

I am one of those who do listen to not only music but also the animation podcasts while animating. As a result I have listened to each podcast probably 20 times (just finished my grad. film – 2D animation- and that was 7 months of loooooong nights.) THANK YOU! they are extremely inspiring especially after hours of flipping paper and thinking why did I get into this business again?! 🙂

I would love to hear your comments on my grad film – afterall, you were there (well at least your and your guests’ voices) every step of the way. You can watch the film till end of Nov. here:

(at the end of the article you’ll find a link to download the film; where it says “hier klicken”)

Hope you enjoy it! Would love to hear your feedback & keep the podcasts comin’ – ahem, i mean, please? 🙂
