  • Show 016 – Burny Mattinson, Part One

    Burny Mattinson, Part One

Burny Mattinson is the only person I know who started working at Disney Animation when Walt was alive, and has been there since. Here’s a SHORT list of films he has worked on: Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood, The Rescuers, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, The Great Mouse Detective, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Mulan. Burny is a talented draughtsman, animator, illustrator, story man, producer, and director with first-hand stories and insights to share with us from his career which spans over fifty years. In part one, Burny recounts how he came to work at the Walt Disney Studios in the 50s, and eventually worked under many of The Nine Old Men there.

  • More to come

Hey everybody! I’ve been trying to find the time to work on the next shows (with a NEW guest), so when that all comes together, you’ll be getting Show 16. In the meantime, while I’m not editing audio, I’ll be taking a fresh look at my email inbox to see if I can whittle down the pile and respond to you if you’ve contacted me. Thanks for the patience. I know there are a lot of different places you can go on the web for animation information, and I’m happy to have you stop by here.

On a side note, I’ve been getting questions about unfinished interviews. I’ve got more Nik Ranieri audio to make a few more shows (and then we’ll get together again to bring it to the present). You’ve heard all the Ron & John audio I have, but now that they’re back at Disney, we can finish what we started. Like I said in Show 15, I’ll be meeting again with Glen, so if you want to ask him a question, use the Voicemail link in the header and record yourself.

    You’ll hear from me soon.

  • BBC Motion Gallery widget for OSX

The BBC Motion Gallery is a fantastic resource for video reference with comprehensive categorization of all its movies. I’ve spent hours combing through the clips. If you’ve got a Mac and OSX Tiger, they’ve released a Dashboard search widget to make finding just the right clip a snap. Separate search words with spaces and it will pare down the results. I searched ‘dog fight’ and it came up with a charming clip of prairie dogs fighting. Amazing!

Thanks to The Unnofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) for the link.

  • Get email updates. Also, testing a more compact look.

For those of you who aren’t subscribed in iTunes, and for the people who don’t get updates via the RSS feed – basically anyone using the internet like it’s still the 90s – I’ve added the option to get an email when a new show is released. I haven’t exactly tested it, but when the next show comes out we’ll see how it works. 🙂

You’ll only get an email when a new podcast is posted.

You can find the link in the sidebar or just click here.

I’m also trying out this new layout that puts the focus on the shows and makes them easier to see on the page. Everything else will be placed under the category ‘Inbetweens’ – what else? – and truncated to show just the title.

If you’re afraid you’ll miss something important, always read the posts in the ‘Noteworthy’ category. They have the cute little heart icon. Isn’t that special?

  • Happy Birthday Animation Podcast!

It was one year ago today that the first show was released. The site’s been around for a bit longer than that, and the idea is even older, but this seems like the right date to celebrate. Podcasting wasn’t even a hobby over two years ago so I could have never imagined that I would spend so much of my spare time doing it. When I started, there were about 3,000 registered podcasts on Podcast Alley. Today there are over 18,000. Many have come and some have gone, but The Animation Podcast is still going strong at the ripe old age of 1.

  • Ask the Listeners: What do you recommend?

This is the first of the ‘Ask the Listeners’ posts, inspired by Ikumi’s comment in Show 15. She loves Manga and says that there’s much more inspiration out there than mainstream art.

So I’d like to pose this question to you, the listeners:
What is something that everyone should see, but probably haven’t?

It can be an artist, a comic book, a film, a short film – anything that you think is great that doesn’t get enough exposure. For example, I’d like to know that if I was to read only one Manga in my life, which one should it be? Or which European short film will knock my socks off? Or what is an awesome Anime film?

    Let’s see what inspires you…

  • We’re back online

If you didn’t know, the site was offline for a day while I transfered to a new host. It was fairly painless. I think in the whole process I only lost one or maybe two of the most recent comments. Well I’m glad that’s all done! I also tried to reduce some of the visual clutter in the process.

I’m assuming you don’t care about all this and just want the next show. I’ve been working on the site all day and I’m all computed out. It’s Easter weekend. Go outside. Breathe fresh air! I’ll get to the next one this week.

    See you guys later.

  • Downtime coming up

I’m transfering my site to a new host in the next week or so. I can’t say exactly when because it’s out of my control. When that happens, the website will most likely not be available for about a day, and that’s if I get to it right away.

I’ve decided to hold off on releasing Glen Keane, Part Two until after the switch because I don’t want people to come looking for it and find absolutely nothing. It’ll only be a short while and when everything is squared away, I’ll put out Show 15.

I host the audio files on a totally different server, so all the previous shows will still be available. The best bet is to access them through iTunes or another podcast directory like Odeo, Yahoo! Podcasts, or Podcast Alley.

Thanks for your understanding and patience,
    Clay

  • A quick check-in

    Hey everybody,
I’ve been collecting a couple things in my head so it’s time to dump them here. (My head only holds so much.)

    Comments
Thanks to everyone who’s commented here on the site and via email. Generally, I’ll respond to the site comments first since the emails I get usually have more detailed questions, but I do try to answer all of them. So if you’ve sent me mail, I’ve got it, I just haven’t had a chance to respond yet.

    Odeo Voicemail
Thanks for all the Odeo voice messages too! Like I said in the last show, the audio is so much better!

    Survey
The survey is still active, so click it in the header, or here, if you haven’t taken it. I have a target number of participants and you’re already half way there. It’s giving me some great insight to who you guys are (and who you’d like to hear on upcoming shows).

    Badges (or buttons)
If you’ve been wanting an image to use on your site to link back to me, want no more. I’ve got a variety of sizes to choose from, so step right up and get your badges here.

    Voting
I’ve kind of dropped the push for votes at Podcast Alley, but listener Paul’s comment rightly points out that it does help to get more listeners. If you’re so inclined, you can vote from the link on the homepage (under Feedback), or through this link. Thanks Paul.
